About the exam

What is the MCCQE?

The Medical Council of Canada Qualifying Examination (MCCQE) is a computer-based national licensing exam required for all physicians seeking to practice medicine in Canada. It tests clinical knowledge, judgment, and decision-making across all major medical disciplines.

The exam is a single-day, computer-based test of 230 multiple-choice questions, delivered in two sections with an optional break between them. As of the 2025 restructuring, the exam is MCQ-only — the former Clinical Decision-Making (CDM) component has been removed.

For International Medical Graduates (IMGs) — including physicians trained in Cameroon, Senegal, Ivory Coast, and other Francophone African countries — the MCCQE is the first major hurdle on the path to Canadian residency.

FAQ

MCCQE — Common questions

What is the MCCQE?

The Medical Council of Canada Qualifying Examination (MCCQE) is a computer-based national licensing exam required for all physicians wishing to practice medicine in Canada. It assesses medical knowledge and clinical decision-making across all major disciplines. As of the 2025 restructuring, the exam is MCQ-only — 230 questions delivered in a single day across two sections.

Who is eligible to take the MCCQE?

Candidates must hold a medical degree from a recognized medical school and be registered with the MCC. International Medical Graduates (IMGs) — including graduates from Cameroonian and other African medical schools — are eligible once they complete the Source Document Verification process.

How many questions are on the MCCQE?

The MCCQE consists of 230 multiple-choice questions, delivered in a single day across two sections with an optional break between them. As of the 2025 restructuring, the exam no longer includes a separate clinical decision-making (CDM) component — all items are MCQ.

What is the pass score on the MCCQE?

The MCCQE is scored on a 300–600 scale, with a mean of 450 and a pass score of 439 (set July 2025).

What is the pass rate for the MCCQE?

The MCC reports pass rates that vary by candidate group. Canadian medical graduates typically have higher first-attempt pass rates than IMGs. Structured preparation — including systematic question bank practice and performance tracking — significantly improves outcomes for IMGs.

How does Fishboard's MCCQE program work?

Fishboard offers two tracks: a 12-week guided cohort with weekly live sessions, tutored reviews, and structured study plans; and a self-paced track with unlimited question bank access, detailed explanations, and the Barbillard analytics dashboard to track your performance by discipline.
